MIS MUN 2025

Article about DISEC at the MUN Conference

Miras International School, Almaty – February 21, 2025

Miras International School, Almaty is proud to host the annual Model United Nations (MUN) conference, bringing together students from different backgrounds to engage in diplomatic discussions and global problem-solving. The conference provides an opportunity for young delegates to develop their negotiation, public speaking, and critical thinking skills while tackling pressing international issues.

As I was checking all the committees at the MUN conference, one in particular grasped my attention—DISEC. The intensity of the debates, the complexity of the issues being discussed, and the engagement of the delegates made me eager to learn more. DISEC stands for Disarmament & International Security Committee. This committee plays a crucial role in considering and negotiating global security matters, particularly focusing on:

  1. The threat of new technologies in modern warfare: drones and autonomous weapons; discussions of international rules for the use of autonomous weapons and unmanned aerial vehicles in military operations; balance between security issues and technological progress.
  2. Cybersecurity in an increasingly digital world: prevention of international cyber conflicts; addressing the issue of how states can cooperate to prevent cyberattacks that threaten global peace and security, especially in the context of growing dependence on digital infrastructure.

The DISEC committee convened in room 104, with a total of 25 delegates representing various nations. The most actively engaged countries in the debates were major global powers, particularly Brazil and China.

A significant portion of the discussion centered on China's ongoing climate change and environmental degradation crisis. Over the past two decades, nearly half of China's rivers have disappeared, and 82% of foreign glaciers have retreated. This environmental catastrophe has placed immense strain on the country’s water resources, further exacerbating its challenges.

Additionally, rising heat waves have contributed to mass migration, severely impacting China's economy, food production, and agriculture. This crisis has also fueled international conflicts over scarce resources. As one of the world’s leading exporters, China’s environmental struggles affect not only its domestic stability but also the global supply chain. Simultaneously, China remains reliant on fossil fuels, which worsens its environmental challenges and creates economic dilemmas.

Recognizing the urgency of this situation, China has appealed to other UN nations for cooperative solutions. In response, measures have been discussed, including the adoption of renewable energy sources to mitigate global warming and promote sustainable development without major disruptions.

I chose to cover this committee because it stood out to me the most. Witnessing the delegates' collaboration, the structured debates, and the well-prepared arguments solidified my interest in DISEC. Without a doubt, this committee has been an engaging and insightful experience.

MIS MUN: Diplomacy in Action

21 February 2025

This year, the MIS Model United Nations (MUN) conference transformed students into young diplomats, bringing together bright minds from different schools to tackle pressing global issues. As a journalist covering the event, I had the privilege of stepping into the world of diplomacy, witnessing firsthand how passionate and determined these delegates were in their mission to find real solutions.

From the moment I entered the conference, I could feel the energy in the room—the intense discussions, the confident voices, the rapid exchanges of ideas. What struck me the most was the spirit of collaboration. Despite representing countries with conflicting viewpoints, delegates treated one another with respect, listened carefully, and worked tirelessly to find compromises. Their speeches were powerful, their debates dynamic, and their negotiations full of determination. It was diplomacy in action, right before my eyes.

One of the most thought-provoking topics discussed was the illegal wildlife trade. Delegates explored the devastating impact this industry has on ecosystems, endangered species, and local communities. The conversations were heated, with delegates proposing stricter international laws, harsher penalties for poachers, and large-scale awareness campaigns. After hours of debate, resolutions began to take shape—carefully crafted plans aimed at making a real impact on global conservation efforts. Watching young leaders come together to tackle such a complex issue filled me with hope.

MIS MUN is more than just a conference—it’s a platform for learning, teamwork, and discovering the true power of diplomacy. Seeing students so engaged, so driven to create change, reminded me that the future is in capable hands. This event proved once again that when young minds unite with passion and purpose, they can spark ideas that have the potential to change the world.

21 February 2025

At the Miras Model United Nations (MUN) conference, delegates from different countries are actively discussing a wide range of important global issues. As I listened to the debates, I was amazed by the passion and dedication of the participants. Out of all the topics being discussed, two caught my attention the most: illegal animal trade and pollution.

The discussions on illegal animal trade were especially eye-opening. Delegates stressed the need for stronger laws, better border security, and awareness campaigns to stop people from buying endangered animals. They talked about how governments should work together to track and punish illegal traders, and some even suggested creating more wildlife sanctuaries to protect animals. It made me realize how serious this issue is and how much effort is needed to stop it.

Pollution was another major topic that sparked intense debate. Delegates proposed solutions such as reducing plastic waste, switching to renewable energy, and encouraging recycling. Many agreed that factories should face stricter regulations to prevent harmful chemicals from polluting our air and water. One idea that stood out to me was organizing global clean-up campaigns—not only to remove waste but also to inspire people to take action. Hearing these discussions made me reflect on how much pollution affects our daily lives and how important it is to work together to protect the environment.

After these engaging discussions, delegates started drafting resolutions—official documents outlining their proposed solutions. Each country worked hard to make their resolutions clear, realistic, and impactful. In the end, the best resolutions will be chosen to help address these global challenges.

This conference showed me the power of teamwork and diplomacy. It was inspiring to see young people from different backgrounds come together, share ideas, and work toward making the world a better place.

Article about MUN Conference at Miras International School, Almaty, 20 February 2025.

MUN stands for Model United Nations, and it is a role-play in which students can participate as delegates and represent given countries. In this conference, students debate, negotiate and do their best to solve global problems. It is a crucial conference for everyone, as students are able to develop vital soft and hard skills. To illustrate: public speaking, critical thinking, and leadership.

So far, it has been a marvelous conference. In fact, it was my first experience not only in MUN conference, but also in general in such a global-scale conference. Roughly 270 delegates have arrived at our school from different world schools. Not only from Almaty and Astana, but also 5 schools have arrived from Russia. My role as a journalist initiated by greeting the guests and providing them a tour around the school. I have done 2 tours—one in English and one in Russian/Kazakh. Besides, I have conducted a multitude of interviews; we have interviewed students from “Arystan” school, one student from Moscow school, and also a Talgar private boarding high school students. In all 3 languages—English, Russian, and Kazakh. It was lovely meeting both for the students and supervisors; their responses was informative and, undoubtedly, I have had something to learn from them. The interviews have been carried out until 09:00, and after the interviews and tours have been finalized, I have accompanied the attendees to the theater to observe the opening ceremony and a concert specifically designed for the MUN conference.

The observance was sublime and captivating. It began with the traditional flag parade conducted by Secondary School students representing international mindedness of Miras students. Next memorable part was  the speech of Head of Miras International School, Almaty Ms Irina Vlassyants and Representative of the United Nations Department of Global Communications and the Head of the United Nations Information office in Kazakhstan  Mr Vlastimil Samek.  It continued with various performances by the students of our school. The most notable one was the performance “The world without war” by primary year students combining dance and a beautiful song.  As a conclusion, all participants, delegates, supervisors and guests have taken a memorable picture captured all of us.

Heretofore, that’s everything I have glanced at, and I am exhilarated for the next stages of convention. Subsequently, we’ll confer with some other fascinating guests and take interviews with them during lunch today. I wish all the delegates good luck, productive and insightful conference, filled with fascinating debates, discussions, and let this experience enhance your leadership, diplomatic and negotiating skills.
